We often forget that Japan is an archipelago made up of 14,125 islands, with only 430 of them inhabited. The five main islands, stretching from north to south, are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. Honshu, the largest, is considered Japan’s mainland.
