josef and anni albers went to mexico at least 14 times between 1935 and 1967. they traveled widely, visiting pre-hispanic sites like teotihuacán, monte albán, tenayuca, mitla, uxmal, and chichén itzá. in a letter to wassily and nina kandinsky in 1936, josef wrote, “mexico is truly the promised land of abstract art, for here it is already thousands of years old”
