ADAM KIMMEL MEN’S F/W 2011

I’d always wanted to do a Pacific North West collection. I grew up watching Twin Peaks and River’s Edge and then a few years ago I came across an artist by the name of Dan Attoe. Dan was then known for his neon bar-sign sculptures but it was his paintings that captured my imagination. I was instantly drawn to his images of the rugged sublime that is the Pacific Northwest - where snow covered volcanoes and primeval redwood forests are the backdrop for the shit-kicking, off-roading antics of his strange biker dudes and Paintallica philosophers. I went to Portland to research the collection. When I visited Dan Attoe I fell in love with his world. It was an America that was more motorcycle punk than granola backpacker – exactly the Twin Peaks vibe I was looking for. I based the collection on the look and sensibility I discovered there. Translated, it became a hip-length hunting jacket that unsnaps and zips to become a long trench. The t-shirts and scarves come with custom Dan Attoe painted motifs. Wearing the signature canvas biker jacket from the collection is a road-trip into the back woods of the artist’s psyche.

American heroes are abundant these days, but one of the most original artists of the last 30 years is Snoop Dogg. He has single handedly reshaped the English language and created a personal style that is its own animal. For my 2011 Spring Summer collection, I decided to go Doggy style. It’s Compton via Italy. Plush cotton silk blends, satin bomber jackets, cashmere sweater football jerseys, jersey mesh, light cashmere shirts, ultra soft cotton twills lend to my luxury signature. I developed custom bandana prints in cotton silk for linings on hoodies, blazers, collars and as other accents throughout the collection. For the first time, I’ve employed the peak notch lapel on blazers, a signature of the Snoop. The lapels roll with an ease and elegance that make them versatile and pimpnotic. Capped off by new accessories - Panama hats, silk ties, workboots, high-top sneakers and suede wingtips it’s a collection that is down with uptown.

I was always fascinated by George’s style and my intuitions about him being as multi-facetted as the intense figures who inhabit his paintings were all confirmed as our friendship and collaboration developed. I learned that he is an incredible gambler who summers in Monte Carlo to be close to the casino, hits the Ritz club when passing through London and even from time to time goes local at Empire Casino in Yonkers New York. My fall winter 2010 Casino collection draws inspiration less from the paintings than the character and style they suggest. The collection is about George and his world. It’s a world that the paintings do cross into but it’s really more about how I picture George dressing: velvet slipper shoes, cashmere v-neck sweaters, polo shirts, with velvet suits in light gray, burgundy, and classic smoking green. There are also plush moleskins, reversible blazers, three-in-one outerwear and blazer that snap in and out of overcoats. Text by Adam Kimmel and photos by Olivier Zahm
