Philip-Lorca diCorcia “East of Eden” at David Zwirner, New York

Philip-Lorca diCorcia applies his lens to Americana with great technical skill. Observing suburbs, landscapes, and different tropes of family life circa 2008, the end of President George W. Bush’s term. There is a mixed feeling of idealism and finality, like these moments represent a struggle to find new meaning in fixed signifiers. The American dream needs new blood to avoid a painful ending. The photographs are washed in natural light but there is a darkness within this collection. Subjects seem alone or in parallel worlds instead of engaged with each other. The mundane and the absurd compete for attention.

This exhibition will be on view at David Zwirner Gallery until May 2nd.
