Paul Thek: Diver, a Retrospective at the Whitney Museum

Paul Thek: Diver, a Retrospective is the first retrospective in the United States devoted to the American artist Paul Thek (1933-1988). After being prominently exhibited in the 60’s and 70’s, he disappeared from art history, only to be now reintroduced.
Hardly classifiable, he is a sculptor, painter, and the creator of radical installations. Notably known for his Meat Pieces series, which corresponded to shiny pieces of raw flesh housed in geometric Plexiglass boxes, he employs unstable and ephemeral substances, combining wax, latex, sand or tissues. With his approach, he ties together the organic and artificial technical world, influencing artists such as Vito Acconci or Bruce Nauman. Paul Thek: Diver, a Retrospective runs through January 9 at Whitney Museum, 945 Madison Ave. at 75th St, New York. Text Pierre-Alexandre Mateos
