MICHAEL ST. JOHN AT ANDREA ROSEN GALLERY, New York

Referencing the 1981 Jasper Johns’ painting In the Studio, Michael St. John’s latest exhibition In the Studio Twenty Eleven is a thoughtful and cohesive body of three dimensional works on canvas which function better as a whole than individually conceived works. St. John’s found imagery elevates the overused people and symbols in contemporary visual culture and reflects on the hierarchy of images. Working for over two decades, the artist precedes a younger generation including Dan Colen and Nate Lowman whose work resonates with similar themes. On view through February 4th 2012 at Andrea Rosen Gallery, 525 West 24th Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
