Germany is a model for the world: the first country to go nuke free by 2022

Amongst the world’s leading industrial powers, Germany has stood out today to announce its withdrawal from nuclear energy by the end of the next decade. This morning, Germany’s ruling coalition agreed to shut down all nuclear plants by 2022, as announced by Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen. “The exit is necessary, and is recommended, in order to rule out the risks of nuclear power,” the commission said. “It is possible, because there are less risky alternatives.” The change will see the implementation and development of alternative energy sources, identifying solar, wind, biomass energy from waste and geothermal. With its singular decision, Germany heralds in a new age for a non-nuclear future. Sources: The New York Times; Le Monde.
